Winter vs. Summer vs. All-Season Tires in Augusta, GA

There are several different types of tires you can equip on your Mazda vehicle. To help you choose from winter, summer, and all-season components, the Service Department at Gerald Jones Mazda is here to assist you!

Winter

While our winter weather in Augusta is often mild, it can be very beneficial to prepare for the unexpected. This is especially true if you plan to head north during the colder months. With their deep grooves and additional sipes, you’ll find that they perform excellently in snowy and icy climates. These units are designed for temperatures below 45 degrees, so swap them for a different set if the average temperature in your area is higher than that. Otherwise, they may degrade more quickly and not function as well. While winter tires are not very common in Georgia, they can be great to have on hand when needed.

Summer

Some of the most common tires found in our area are summer units. These are designed with a wide frame and shallow tread depths to maximize contact on roads like 15th Street. Because of this, you can get better traction on wet and dry pavement alike. In fact, you might even notice that your fuel economy increases when you use these components in hot weather. If the temperature outside goes below 45 degrees, however, their performance wanes. Summer units are not recommended for travel in the winter, as they do not provide the necessary traction to deal with snow or ice. All-Season

Most vehicles come standard with all-season tires, a type of component that can do well in most weather conditions. While they aren’t nearly as specialized as the other kinds previously mentioned, they can give you adequate traction and handling during hot or cold weather. They also won’t need to be changed out every season, which is great for motorists who don’t drive down Broad Street every day. However, summer tires are often better for the blistering temperatures we get here in Augusta, so consider all your options before committing to just one!
